The suprascapular nerve is a major motor nerve that is responsible for controlling the shoulder muscles. Patients who experience discomfort from arthritis, impingement of the suprascapular nerve in the shoulder joint, or bursitis are often treated with this procedure. Using X-ray-guided fluoroscopy, the physician determines the precise location of the suprascapular nerve and injects a local anesthetic. An anti-inflammatory steroid medication is then delivered to the nerve with a needle to provide pain relief to the region and reduce inflammation. Patients typically experience pain relief within 2-7 days.
