The body’s autonomic nervous system is made up of two sub-networks of nerves that extend along the length of the spine: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. These nerves regulate automatic processes such as breathing, heart rate, and more. At times, they can carry painful signals as well. This procedure is especially helpful for patients who have leg pain from a diagnosis such as CRPS or severe peripheral neuropathy. The procedure entails injecting an anesthetic to the target nerve(s), which will be determined by X-ray fluoroscopy. In total, this process takes about 20 minutes. After the injection, the patient will be monitored and then safely discharged to go home. Patients are instructed to rest for the remainder of the day but can typically resume their typical activities the next day.
