Ganglion Impar Block
The ganglion nerve is part of the sympathetic nervous system and is found near the sacrum, the lowest section of the spine. A ganglion is an anatomical part of the nervous system where nerves interact and communicate. Therefore, nerves that communicate pain originating from the lower pelvis or groin area often pass through the ganglion impar. Using X-ray-guided fluoroscopy, the physician determines the precise location of the ganglion impar and injects a local anesthetic with a needle near the tailbone and between the buttocks to block the communication of pain from this region. In some cases, a steroid medication may be administered as well to reduce inflammation.
