An epidural blood patch can be used as an effective active treatment for spinal headaches. These can occur up to 5 days after a lumbar puncture, and are typically described as a severe headache unlike any other a patient has experienced before. Pain typically worsens when in the upright position. For this procedure, a needle is injected into the same site as the lumbar puncture and injects autologous blood. Patients normally experience relief from their spinal headaches almost immediately. After being monitored for a short period of time, the patient can be safely discharged home and resume their daily activities.
