The carpal tunnel is located in the wrist and consists of nerves and tendons that connect the forearm to part of the palm. Because this passageway is so narrow, any swelling of the tendons located in the carpal tunnel can result in nerve compression, ultimately leading to numbness and/or pain. Carpal tunnel syndrome can make simple tasks especially difficult. Patients often struggle buttoning a shirt, writing, or staying asleep throughout the night.

In this procedure, the physician will use ultrasound to guide a needle into the carpal tunnel and deliver an anti-inflammatory steroid medication as well as a local anesthetic. This procedure takes about 5-10 minutes and patients can resume their daily activities shortly after.
