Costochondritis is inflammation of the cartilage that attaches the rib to the sternum. This condition is often characterized by chest pain that mimics that of a heart attack or other heart conditions, and can also be accompanied by swelling in the region. The pain may feel sharp, aching, or like exerting pressure, and usually worsens with deep breathing or coughing. This condition is often caused by physical injury, arthritis, or physical strain.
